It is not possible for the management of a company to do everything and respond to every situation. Choices have to be made with regards to what is most important and what to deal with and how to deal with them. This is what strategic management is all about. The important questions that every strategic management team should be asking go along the lines of, “What is the most critical issue?” And “What is the best response to this issue?”. The strategic plan of a business is there to help the management answer these questions. The management will often have to take what the plan suggests as a guideline though. No plan set up a number of years ago is able to properly predict what the best decision will be as it cannot know what the situation will be like at that point in time. It can be a good place to start though if the issues confronting a company seem to be completely overwhelming.
